XM charges a $5 monthly dormant fee after 90 days with no trading, deposits or withdrawals. Here is what resets the clock, what does not, and how to avoid the fee.

Quick answer: XM charges an inactivity fee of $5 per month once your live account has had no trades, deposits or withdrawals for 90 calendar days. If less than $5 is left, XM takes whatever balance remains. Accounts with a zero balance are not charged; they are archived instead.

The XM inactivity fee (XM calls it a dormant account fee) is one of the few charges XM makes outside the spread, and it catches out traders who deposit, take a break and forget the account. Here is exactly when it applies, what does and does not reset the clock, and how to make sure you never pay it.

XM Inactivity Fee at a Glance

SituationWhat XM charges
Activity within the last 90 daysNothing
90+ days with no trade, deposit or withdrawal$5 per month
Dormant, with less than $5 of free balanceThe remaining free balance
Zero balanceNo fee; the account is archived after 90 days

The fee stays at $5 a month for as long as the account is dormant. It is taken from your free balance only, so it can never push your account below zero or leave you owing XM money.

What Counts as Activity at XM?

XM's terms define a dormant account as one with no trading, withdrawals or deposits for at least 90 calendar days. Any one of these resets the 90-day clock:

  • Opening or closing a trade on the live account
  • Depositing money into the account
  • Withdrawing money from the account

Two things that do not count:

  • Logging in. Signing in to the Members Area or to MT4/MT5 without trading, depositing or withdrawing does not stop the account becoming dormant. Some websites say a login is enough; XM's own terms only list trading, withdrawals and deposits.
  • Demo trading. Activity on a demo account has no effect on your live account.

The counter runs per trading account. If you hold several XM accounts, each one needs its own activity.

How to Avoid the XM Inactivity Fee

  1. Withdraw everything before a long break. A zero balance account is never charged. This is the cleanest option if you will not trade for three months or more.
  2. Place a small live trade before day 90. One micro-lot trade (0.01 lots) resets the clock, and on EUR/USD the spread cost is a few cents.
  3. Make a small deposit. A deposit also counts as activity, though a trade is usually cheaper.
  4. Set a reminder at day 80. A calendar reminder gives you ten days of margin before the fee starts.

Does the Fee Apply to Islamic Accounts?

Yes. The swap-free (Islamic) option only removes overnight swap charges. A dormant Islamic account is charged the same $5 per month as any other XM account. See our Islamic forex brokers guide for brokers with swap-free accounts.

How to Reactivate a Dormant or Archived XM Account

  • Dormant account with a balance: it is still open. Place a trade, deposit or withdraw and it is active again; the monthly fee stops from then on.
  • Archived account (zero balance): log in to the XM Members Area and contact XM support through live chat or email to ask for it to be reactivated, or open a new trading account under the same profile.

Fees already charged on a dormant account are not normally refunded, so it pays to act before day 90. For every other XM charge, read the complete XM fees guide and the XM withdrawal fees guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the XM inactivity fee?

$5 per month, charged once an account has had no trading, deposits or withdrawals for 90 calendar days. If the free balance is below $5, XM charges the remaining balance instead.

Does logging in to MT4 or MT5 stop the XM inactivity fee?

No. XM's terms base dormancy on trading, withdrawals and deposits. Logging in without doing one of those does not reset the 90-day period.

Can the XM inactivity fee make my balance negative?

No. The fee is limited to your free balance. Once the balance reaches zero, no further fee is charged and the account is archived.

Is there an XM inactivity fee on a zero balance account?

No. Accounts with a zero balance are not charged. XM archives them after 90 calendar days.

Does the XM inactivity fee apply to demo accounts?

No. Demo accounts use virtual money and are never charged. Demo trading also does not count as activity on your live account.
