What Leverage Does XM Offer?

XM provides leverage up to 1:1000 on forex pairs for clients registered under XM Global Limited (IFSC, Belize). This means you can control a $100,000 position with just $100 in your account.

The maximum leverage available depends on which XM entity regulates your account and which instrument you are trading:

Instrument Max Leverage (XM Global) Min Margin Required Margin on 1 lot ($100K)
Forex major pairs 1:1000 0.1% $100
Forex minor pairs 1:1000 0.1% $100
Gold (XAU/USD) 1:500 0.2% ~$50 per oz
Silver (XAG/USD) 1:500 0.2% Variable
Oil (WTI/Brent) 1:66 1.5% Variable
Stock indices 1:100 - 1:200 0.5-1% Variable
Stock CFDs 1:10 - 1:20 5-10% Variable

How Leverage Works at XM - Simple Example

Leverage multiplies your buying power. Here is how it works in practice:

Example: Trading EUR/USD with 1:100 leverage
  • You want to buy 1 standard lot of EUR/USD (100,000 euros)
  • Without leverage, you need $100,000 in your account
  • With 1:100 leverage, you only need $1,000 (1% margin)
  • With 1:500 leverage, you only need $200 (0.2% margin)
  • With 1:1000 leverage, you only need $100 (0.1% margin)

Important: leverage amplifies both profits AND losses equally. A 1% move against your position with 1:100 leverage wipes out your entire margin for that trade.

XM Leverage in AED - Margin Requirements for UAE Traders

To help UAE traders understand margin requirements in local currency, here are common scenarios at different leverage levels for a 1 mini lot (0.1 lot = 10,000 units) EUR/USD trade:

Leverage Margin USD (0.1 lot) Margin AED Margin SAR Risk per 10 pip move
1:50 $200 AED 735 SAR 750 $10 (5% of margin)
1:100 $100 AED 367 SAR 375 $10 (10% of margin)
1:200 $50 AED 184 SAR 187.50 $10 (20% of margin)
1:500 $20 AED 73.45 SAR 75 $10 (50% of margin)
1:1000 $10 AED 36.73 SAR 37.50 $10 (100% of margin)

Note: the pip value stays the same regardless of leverage. Leverage only affects how much margin you need to hold the position - not how much you gain or lose per pip.

How to Change Your XM Leverage

You can change the leverage on your XM account at any time, for free, directly from the XM Members Area:

  1. Log in to your XM Members Area at my.xm.com
  2. Go to "My Accounts" and find the account you want to change
  3. Click the settings icon or "Change Leverage"
  4. Select your new leverage from the dropdown
  5. Confirm the change

The change takes effect immediately for new positions. Open positions are not affected until they are closed and reopened.

Important: XM will not allow you to increase leverage if you have open positions with insufficient free margin to support the change. Close your positions first, then change leverage.

What Leverage Should UAE Traders Use at XM?

Higher leverage is not always better. Here is a practical guide based on experience level:

Beginner
1:50 - 1:100

Low enough to survive mistakes. Margin calls are less frequent. Gives you time to learn without being wiped out by a single bad trade.

Intermediate
1:100 - 1:200

Standard range for experienced traders with a tested strategy and consistent risk management of 1-2% per trade.

Caution zone
1:500 - 1:1000

Only for very experienced traders with small position sizes. A 10-pip adverse move at 1:1000 on a full lot can exceed your margin for that trade.

Exness Unlimited* 1:2000 FSA (Global)
IC Markets 1:500 1:500 ASIC / CySEC

IG 1:200 1:100 DFSA / FCA

*Exness unlimited leverage applies only under specific account balance and equity conditions.

XM Margin Call and Stop Out Levels

Understanding when XM will close your positions is critical when using high leverage:

  • Margin Call level: 50% - XM sends a warning when your equity falls to 50% of your used margin. You should add funds or close positions at this point.
  • Stop Out level: 20% - XM automatically closes your least profitable open position when your equity drops to 20% of used margin. This continues until your margin level returns above 20%.
Practical example: You have $1,000 in your account and open a trade requiring $200 margin (1:100 leverage on 0.2 lots EUR/USD). If your account equity drops to $100 (50% of $200 margin), you receive a margin call. If it drops to $40 (20% of $200), XM auto-closes your position.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum leverage at XM?

XM offers maximum leverage of 1:1000 on forex pairs for clients under XM Global Limited (IFSC regulated). Leverage on other instruments is lower: 1:500 for gold, 1:66 for oil, and 1:10-1:20 for stock CFDs.

Can I change my XM leverage after opening an account?

Yes. You can change your XM leverage at any time for free through the XM Members Area. The change takes effect immediately for new positions. It is best to change leverage when you have no open positions.

What leverage does XM offer for gold trading?

XM offers up to 1:500 leverage on gold (XAU/USD). This means you need 0.2% margin to hold a gold position - approximately $50 per standard lot of gold at current prices.

Is 1:1000 leverage safe?

No leverage level is inherently safe or unsafe - it depends entirely on your position size. A trader using 1:1000 leverage but risking only 0.1 lot is taking on less risk than a trader using 1:100 leverage on 1 lot. What matters is the dollar value of your position relative to your account balance.

What is XM margin call level?

XM triggers a margin call warning when your account equity falls to 50% of your used margin. The stop out level is 20% - at this point XM automatically closes your least profitable positions to protect the remaining balance.

What leverage does XM offer for UAE traders?

UAE traders registered under XM Global Limited (the entity most UAE residents use) have access to leverage up to 1:1000 on forex pairs. UAE traders registered under XM Cyprus (CySEC regulated) are limited to 1:30 on major forex pairs under ESMA rules.
