Why keep a trading journal?

Single trades tell you almost nothing; patterns across 30 to 50 trades tell you a lot. A journal shows whether your losses come from bad setups or from breaking your own rules, which setups actually make money, and whether your average win is big enough to cover your average loss.

What the numbers mean

  • Win rate: the share of trades that made money. A low win rate can still be profitable if winners are much larger than losers.
  • Expectancy: the average result per trade (net result divided by number of trades). If it is negative over 30 or more trades, the approach needs changing before you trade bigger.
  • Followed plan: the share of trades where you stuck to your own rules. Compare results with and without the plan in the notes.

Practise new setups risk-free on real historical charts in the backtesting tool, and size every trade with the position size calculator.
