How gold is quoted, what one lot is worth, margin, what moves the price, the best hours to trade from the UAE, and a simple risk plan for your first XAU/USD trades.

Key Takeaways

  • Most traders in the Gulf trade gold as XAU/USD, the price of one troy ounce in US dollars, through a CFD broker.
  • A standard gold lot is usually 100 ounces, so every $1 move in the gold price is worth $100 per standard lot ($10 per 0.1 lot, $1 per 0.01 lot). Check your broker's contract size.
  • Gold moves most during the London-New York overlap (about 5 PM to 9 PM UAE time in winter, 4 PM to 8 PM in summer), especially around US inflation and interest rate news.
  • Trading gold CFDs is not the same as owning gold. If you want metal you can hold, buy physical gold or a bank gold account instead.

How Gold Is Quoted

Gold trades in US dollars per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, which is why the price you see on a trading platform looks very different from the per-gram price in the Gold Souk. To turn the platform price into dirhams per gram, divide by 31.1035 and multiply by 3.6725 (the fixed dirham rate). Example: at an illustrative price of $3,000 an ounce, 24-carat gold is about $96.45 a gram, or about AED 354 a gram. The gold price today page does this conversion live, and the gold calculator works it out for any carat and weight.

Shops price jewellery above this spot value because of making charges and the lower purity of 22-, 21- and 18-carat gold.

This guide is about the third option: trading the gold price through a broker.

Lot Sizes and What a Move Is Worth

Most brokers set one standard gold lot at 100 ounces. That makes the maths simple:

  • 1.00 lot (100 oz): $100 per $1 move in the gold price
  • 0.10 lot (10 oz): $10 per $1 move
  • 0.01 lot (1 oz): $1 per $1 move

Gold regularly moves $20 to $50 or more in a day, so a full standard lot can swing by thousands of dollars. Beginners should start with 0.01 lots. Some brokers use a different contract size or call a $0.01 or $0.10 step a "pip" on gold, so always read the instrument specification on your platform before trading.

Margin: How Much Money Ties Up

Margin is the deposit your broker holds while a trade is open. It equals the trade's value divided by your leverage. Example at an illustrative price of $3,000: 0.10 lot is 10 ounces, worth $30,000. At 1:100 leverage the margin is $300; at 1:20 it is $1,500. Leverage on gold is often set lower than on currency pairs, and it depends on your broker's licence. Leverage changes how much money is tied up, not how much each $1 move costs you.

What Moves the Gold Price

  • The US dollar: gold is priced in dollars, so a weaker dollar tends to support gold and a stronger dollar tends to weigh on it.
  • US interest rates: gold pays no interest. When interest rates after inflation rise, holding gold becomes less attractive, and the reverse.
  • Inflation and central bank decisions: US inflation (CPI) releases and Federal Reserve meetings often cause the biggest moves of the month.
  • Risk and uncertainty: wars, financial stress and political shocks tend to push buyers toward gold.
  • Central bank buying: large purchases by central banks add long-term demand.

Check the economic calendar before you trade. Many traders avoid opening new gold positions in the minutes before major US data.

When to Trade Gold From the UAE

Gold trades almost 24 hours a day on weekdays, but it is most active when London and New York are both open: about 5 PM to 9 PM UAE time in winter and 4 PM to 8 PM in summer. Most US data that moves gold comes out at 5:30 PM UAE time in winter and 4:30 PM in summer. Spreads are usually widest around the daily rollover after midnight and in the first minutes after the market reopens on Monday. See the best time to trade from the Gulf for the full session table.

A Simple Risk Plan for Your First Gold Trades

  1. Decide your risk per trade, for example 1% of the account.
  2. Place the stop loss where your idea is proven wrong, for example below a recent swing low.
  3. Size the trade so the stop equals your risk. With a $1,000 account, 1% is $10; with a stop $5 away, that is $10 / ($5 x $100) = 0.02 lots. The position size calculator has a gold setting that does this for you.
  4. Write down the entry, stop, target and reason before you place it.

Practise first. The free backtesting tool lets you replay real XAU/USD charts candle by candle and place virtual trades, so you can see how gold really moves before you risk money.

Gold and Islamic Accounts

Swap-free (Islamic) accounts remove overnight interest charges on gold CFDs. Some scholars also hold that gold may only be exchanged hand to hand on the spot, which leveraged or deferred gold contracts do not meet, while others permit swap-free trading. If this matters to you, ask a scholar you trust, and read our guide to Islamic accounts.

Choosing a Broker for Gold

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do I need to start trading gold?

Technically only enough to cover the margin on 0.01 lots, but a few hundred dollars gives room to use a sensible stop loss while risking about 1% per trade. Never trade gold with money you cannot afford to lose.

How much is 1 lot of gold?

At most brokers one standard lot is 100 troy ounces, so each $1 move in the price is worth $100 per lot. Check your broker's contract specification, as some use a different size.

Is XAU/USD the same as buying gold in Dubai?

No. XAU/USD tracks the spot price of gold in dollars, but a CFD does not give you any metal. Buying from a jeweller or a bullion dealer gives you physical gold, with making charges and a buy/sell difference instead of spreads and swaps.

What time is gold most active in the UAE?

During the London-New York overlap: about 5 PM to 9 PM UAE time in winter and 4 PM to 8 PM in summer, when US economic data is released.

Trading gold CFDs with leverage carries a high risk of losing money quickly. Only trade with money you can afford to lose.

Risk Warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. The majority of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
